We know that gardening isn’t for everyone. The idea of taking seeds and transforming them into fully functional, glorious plants, well for some that is the perfect way to spend some time and for others it may seem like a waste of their time.
Well, we know which side of the fence we sit on and to show you why we raise our green fingered hands to the sky and celebrate gardening, we have put together some of the many benefits of gardening.
It burns calories
Whilst burning calories shouldn’t be the only reason that you take up gardening; if you are looking to lose weight, but you want to take a slightly different approach then always heading to the gym, then this is a good idea for you. It might not burn as much as a long run, or a fitness class, but it does allow you to burn calories whilst you do something that you enjoy doing.
It helps to reduce stress
Stress is something that we all feel on a regular basis in our lives. Whether it is within our family, at work or perhaps related to finances. Whilst a little bit of stress isn’t going to be too much of a problem, ongoing stress can have a huge impact on your physical and mental wellbeing. Gardening gives you the chance to escape and to find a way to reduce your stress levels.
It gives you something to focus on
Gardening is a great way to make sure that you have something to focus on, something to do and something to give you purpose. Taking care of a plant, flowers, herbs or anything else; means that you have a focus on something that is in the here and now. This can form a great part of mindfulness which has been proven as a beneficial to a variety of people, such as those who have anxiety and depression.
You can do it as a family
Do you worry that you are not spending enough quality time together as a family? Run out of things to do on a day to day basis? Gardening is a great activity as it is something that the whole family can do together. It encourages children to get outside and spend time with their parents/grandparents and it also gives them the satisfaction of being able to watch something grow and know that they played a part in it.
It gets you outside
Many of us have a tendency to stay inside and simply watch TV if we don’t have a reason to get up and get out. When you have plants out in your garden that need to be looked after, then you have a reason to get up and get out; and as we all know, being active and being outside is pretty great for your all round health.
As you can see, gardening has plenty of benefits that you might not realise. Aside from brightening up your outdoor space, it also helps to ensure that you feel better both mentally and physically.
