10 Ways to Add More Spaciousness to Your Home

Collaborative content

No matter how big or small your home may be, you can never have enough space and you might be surprised to know that there are a lot of very effective ways you can create more space, many of which will cost you very little money at all.

1. Add an extension

The obvious way to create more space in your home is also one of the most expensive, but it can really transform your home so it is worth considering. Adding san extra storey to your home or maybe even using one of these bespoke oak frame building kits to add an extra building on the ground floor will give you more room to play, eat, relax or store your stuff depending on what you need, and it will also add a lot of value to your home too.

2. Hang mirrors

Okay, so hanging mirrors around your home won’t actually give you more space, but it will create the illusion of spaciousness which is often all you need when you’re feeling a little claustrophobic in a smaller space.

How do mirrors help?  They are able to bounce light around the room which adds to the sense of spaciousness, but they also reflect the skyline, the trees, the hallway – whatever they are facing – back into the room which makes the place seem, much more open too.

3. Declutter

Again, decluttering won’t magically increase the actual square footage of your home, but there is every chance that it will increase the amount of square footage that is open and available for use. The less stuff you have, the less space you will need to use storing it and the more freedom you will have around your home to do whatever it is you are craving the additional space for.

4. Utilize the high ceilings

If you are lucky enough to have high ceilings in your home, then it can be really good to use that space that would otherwise be wasted. There are a number of ways you can do this from creating a loft bed area so you can use the actual bedroom for something else to installing high shelves where you can safely store your stuff away.

5. Use hidden storage

Hidden storage like ottomans and beds that have drawers in the bottom will enable you to hide away all of that excess stuff that is taking up room and allow you to get by with a little less furniture which means you will be able to free up a lot more space in your home with very little effort at all.

6. Wall-mount furniture

Wall-mounting furniture, like fixing foldable desks and lamps to the wall, is another excellent way to increase the amount of floor space you have access to, and if you do it right it can look pretty good too.

7. Consider off-site storage

Using off-site storage lockers to keep those things that you do not absolutely need to have in your home is another really good way to get rid of the excess and increase the spaciousness of your home significantly.

8. Take out the walls

Removing non-load bearing walls is a really good way to open up your space. Walls take up a lot more space than you might think, and they also make your home seem more closed in than it really is, so by removing them, you can free up some extra square footage and create a beautiful open-plan living space that screams spaciousness.

9. Dig a basement

It isn’t always possible, but if your contractors say that it is safe to do so, digging down below the foundations to create your very own basement space is an excellent way to significantly increase the amount of space in your home. Again, it will also add to the value of your home. While you’re doing this, you may want to think about soundproofing the space to make it something really special.

10. Let the daylight in

Opening the blinds and windows will let more natural sunlight into your home will make it feel like you’re in a beautiful outdoor space with no limitations whatsoever, so be sure to do just that as often as you can instead of keeping your home in virtual darkness.

As you can see, there are so many ways to create more space in your home, and many of them are pretty simple, not to mention affordable, to put in place, so next time you’re feeling crowded in your own home, put an idea or two into action!
