Our homes are our sanctuaries. They are the places we come back to when we want to rest, relax and have some time out from the hustle and bustle of the world, so it can be really annoying when your home is simply not as quiet or peaceful as you would like.
The good news is, there are a number of things you can do to design a home that is much quieter, even if you live on a busy street or have noisy neighbours to contend with, as you will see below…
Insulate walls and ceilings
One of the most effective ways to reduce noise levels in your home is to insulate your walls and ceilings. Adding insulation can help to absorb sound and prevent it from travelling through your home. This is especially important if you live in a busy area or near a major road. It’s a good idea to hire an installation specialist to do this for you as it can be quite complex and there are lots of different materials to choose from.
Install window shutters
Not only do window shutters give your home a rustic French style, but they are also greatest at blocking out the sounds of traffic, wind, and pretty much anything else thst goes on outside your home, due to the fact they are made from thick wood instead of the thin fabrics that most other window treatments are fashioned from. So, if oyu live on a busy street, having shutters is a must.
Hang fabric
Hanging fabric from the walls is a great way to prevent echoes and muffle sounds you’d rather not hear in full force. It is also a great alternative to wallpaper, which can make your home look even more interesting. So, although it is, perhaps, not the most common way to decorate your space, there is no reason why you should not use colourful tapestries and the like to give your home a peaceful makeover.
Choose the optimum flooring
Flooring can have a big impact on the acoustics of a room, so it is really important that you choose the right one. Hardwood flooring and tiles, for example, can cause a whole lot of noise, whereas thick carpets are not only not noisy to walk on, but can absorb other sounds being made in the room too. If you must have wooden or tiled flooring, then investing in some big area rugs to cover up the space and provide some sound protection, is a good idea.
Plants are powerful
The power of plants to absorb sound is something that is often talked about when designing the garden space, but not when it comes to interior design, However foliage is great at absorbing sound, while also adding colour and style to your space.
As you can see, there are lots of simple design hacks you can employ to ensure that your home is as peaceful and quiet as it is possible to be. So, what are you waiting for?
